Botox® (botulinum toxin)

Fed up with anti-ageing face creams that just don’t work?

What is Botox® (botulinum toxin)?

For over 30 years, Botox® (botulinum toxin) injections have been safely used in conventional medicine and for cosmetic therapy. Today, Botox® (botulinum toxin) has been used by over 1 million patients worldwide as a safe and effective non-surgical cosmetic treatment to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

How does it work?

A minute amount of Botox® (botulinum toxin) is injected directly into the wrinkles such as frown lines, forehead lines and crowsfeet using a very small needle to temporarily relax the facial muscles. It works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the overactive muscles that cause fine lines and wrinkles through repeatedly contracting and fracturing the skin.

You only feel a few tiny pin prick injections, so there is no need for sedatives or a local anaesthetic.

Botox® (botulinum toxin) can also be used to treat excessive perspiration, otherwise known as Hyperhidrosis, which is caused by the stimulation of the sweat glands by nerve endings. Through injecting Botox® (botulinum toxin) into the problem area, the nerve impulses are blocked, preventing sweating for several months at a time with visible results within days.

What is the procedure?

Prior to treatment, one of our qualified and experienced doctors will undertake a consultation to understand your requirements and to determine where to administer the injections to achieve the best results for you by assessing your muscle movement.

The Botox® (botulinum toxin) injection procedure involves several tiny pin prick injections of Botox® (botulinum toxin) with minimal discomfort. It only takes 15 minutes and because no anaesthetic is required, you can return to your normal day-to-day activities immediately.

The procedure will be explained to you by the doctor, who will answer any questions you may have.

When will I see results?

You will start to see results 24-72 hours after treatment with the main effect apparent after 7-12 days. Your face will look smoother, younger and more relaxed.

Will I look natural?

Although the results are visible, a Botox® (botulinum toxin) treatment will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look unnatural. The muscle activity that causes frown lines between the brows is simply reduced.

How long will it last?

Although it varies from patient to patient, the results usually last for three to four months and fade gradually. You can repeat the treatment every four months and repeated treatments cause thinning of the muscles resulting in longer lasting results. You may find that treated lines and wrinkles become less deep, and you can leave longer intervals between treatments.

Is it safe?

You shouldn't use Botox® (botulinum toxin) if you are taking muscle relaxants, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a bleeding disorder or have any inflammation or infection near the spot where injections would be given.

Side effects are very rare after Botox® (botulinum toxin) treatments, however side effects can include slight burning, headache and muscle weakness which are not permanent and correct themselves as the Botox® (botulinum toxin) wears off.

Ask your practitioner for advice if any of these are a concern.

What happens if I do not continue treatment?

If you do not continue treatments, your lines and wrinkles will gradually revert to how they looked before Botox® (botulinum toxin) treatment.

How much does it cost?

It costs up to £350 per treatment, to a maximum of £500 for a full face. Suitable areas for treatment include crows' feet, forehead lines and frown lines.
